Bus Driver Training Class
Pupil transportation plays an important role in the educational process. Transporting children to and from school each day is a responsibility that requires good physical health, professionalism, emotional stamina, determination, dedication, and skill. The main objective of any pupil transportation system is to transport students to and from school each day safely and efficiently.
The Augusta County Transportation Department is always looking for responsible and safe drivers for part-time and substitute driving. When full time positions become available, these drivers will then have the opportunity to move to full time.
All interested persons must have a positive driving record and be of good moral character. They must be responsible, upstanding, and physically and mentally prepared for the driving task of transporting students. One must be even tempered and friendly. Being neat, clean and properly dressed is a must. Applicants must be free of the effects of alcohol, illegal drugs, and medication. All applicants will be drug screened, fingerprinted and background checks performed before any behind the wheel training.
As of February 7th there are new Federal regulations for those looking to obtain your CDL license for the first time or, if you are an existing CDL holder that needs to obtain the Passenger and School Bus endorsements. You must first complete the 24 hour new bus driver training course approved by the US Department of Transportation. We hold these classes once a month. Please check our web site for the next available date. Once you have taken the class, your information will be registered in order to take the skills test. For first time applicants, you will need the CDL Class B with Air brakes, as well as Passenger endorsement and School Bus endorsement. The complete School Bus Driver Training Course is divided into three categories, Classroom Instruction, Behind-the-wheel without students, and Behind-the-wheel with students. The classroom minimum time is 24 hours and Behind-the-wheel minimum time is 24 hours for a total Training Time of 48+ hours.
It is strongly encouraged that you have your CDL learners permit before attending the 24 hour class. Please contact us at the bus garage for a copy of the study guide.
