6th Grade Exploratory Course Descriptions

ART 6 - This is a six week course that is designed to introduce students to new experiences in art.  Students will use a variety of art materials to create challenging and fun projects.  In this fast paced class, students will focus on developing and improving their skills in things such as: drawing, painting, and improving their creativity.   

INTRODUCTION TO AGRISCIENCE - Sixth grade students develop an awareness of the relationships between agriculture and science. Major concepts covered in the course include awareness of agriculture, the world of work, agricultural careers, FFA, plant science, animal science, shop safety, and woodworking.

EXPLORING MUSIC - This class is designed to explore different musical opportunities that are offered here at BMMS. Students will learn what it means to create music as part of an ensemble and strengthen their music reading skills. We will explore music through singing, playing guitar, and playing Orff instruments. Students will participate in an in-class recital at the end of the class to show off their musical accomplishments.  

INTRODUCTION TO FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE - This six-week exploratory course is designed to give students the opportunity to develop and practice various skills needed to be responsible, productive family and community members. Students will explore kitchen safety, measurement, and preparation of healthy snacks. Basic life skills are stressed and include such things as working cooperatively, caring for equipment, nutrition, clothing maintenance, and following directions. Students will create and complete a textile project. Since this class explores what is fundamental to everyday living, the subject matter is engaging and useful to all students.

INTRODUCTION TO TECHNOLOGY – This class will give you the opportunity to see what Technology Education has to offer you now and what it has to offer you in the 7th and 8th grades. Critical thinking, design and problem solving are a part of the activities in this class. Students will make a paper airplane and learn to control the plane’s flight.  Students will also make a wind powered sail car that will race against other students’ cars. Lastly, students will use legos to build machines using gears, pulleys, levers and motors and will learn how to make work easier by building different machines. They will learn about simple and compound machines.

KEYBOARDING – This class is designed to teach students proper keyboarding techniques and to begin learning how to type without looking at the keys. Students will learn to use Google Documents and Google Slideshows as well as making magnets, stickers, and bookmarks. Students will also integrate Google classroom, various websites and other applications to complete assignments during the six weeks.

BEGINNING BAND - This course is offered to 6th grade students – NO previous musical experience necessary! Students are taught how to read music and play the instrument of their choice in 6th grade beginning band. If you have even the slightest interest in music, this is the best time to sign up and give band a try! Instruction will also include preparing music for a winter concert and spring concert. Instruments offered include: flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, and percussion (mallets, snare, bass drum, cymbals, timpani). Information will be sent regarding an instrument rental program, so there is no need to buy an instrument. There are also a limited number of school-owned instruments available to sign-out. These instruments are available on a “first come, first serve” basis. Students will also incorporate technology into their music experience using iPads and computer programs to assess their musical growth and to create some amazing music related projects. Enrollment in the 6th grade beginning band class also prepares students for additional opportunities in 7th grade band, including jazz band, introduction to guitar/electric bass, honor bands, and beginning drumline activities!
