The program's objective is to improve the health of students by providing a variety of palatable, high-quality, safe, nutritious foods that students will enjoy eating at a price affordable to them. The menus are planned by nutritional experts including registered dietitians. 

The lunch program is planned to meet one-third of the recommended dietary allowance for the day. Each lunch includes: milk, bread, protein rich foods, fruits and/or vegetables. The breakfast program is offered because students who eat breakfast are more alert, less fatigued, and have a better chance of doing well in school. Each breakfast contains: milk, one serving of vegetable/fruit or juice, and two servings of either bread or meat. 

The School Nutrition Program is an extension of the educational programs of the schools, and is operated under the federally funded National School Lunch Act and Child Nutrition Act. The federal laws regulating the food service programs are administered by the United States Department of Agriculture through the regional office and implemented within the Commonwealth of Virginia by the State Department of Education.

The School Nutrition Program of Augusta County Public Schools employs more than 125 food service professionals that take pride in serving approximately 10,400 students daily at 18 schools within the division. Breakfast, lunch, and a la carte items are available in all schools.

The School Nutrition Program of Augusta County Schools participates in the Shenandoah School Food Buying Cooperative in order to help keep costs as low as possible. The Cooperative evaluates, bids, and purchases food and supplies as one purchasing entity to take advantage of volume pricing. The Cooperative is comprised of two groups representing different geographic regions. The Piedmont Group is comprised of 45 schools serving more than 29,000 students and represents the following school divisions; Alexandria City, Culpeper County, Falls Church City, and Fauquier County. The Blue Ridge Group is comprised of 54 schools serving more than 31,000 students and represents the following school divisions; Augusta County, Harrisonburg City, Rockingham County, and Shenandoah County.
